All seventeen year old Vesta wants to do is become a Firebrand and rescue her father–who was kidnapped by an evil spirit–and escape her sunless, gloomy life in the Outskirts. Not to mention getting out from under her stepdad's immaturity and away from her mother's sort-of existence. To do this, she must earn her status as a Firebrand by wielding spiritfire in three demon-laden trials. But once she arrives at training, she comes face-to-face with her ex-boyfriend, who threatens to sabotage her future as viciously as he did her past.

Vesta's twin brother, Austev Berath, wants to run again, preferably into the arms of his dream girl. However, he broke both legs and he’ll never walk the same again, and...she’s betrothed someone else. Someone normal. As if his luck couldn't get any worse, he is uninvited to the Firebrand trials and kicked out of the pueblo by his stepdad…on the same day. Tired of waiting for Eliakim, the Firebrand 's deity, to restore him, Tev decides to take his healing into his own hands, but it quickly becomes way more than he bargained for. Not only does his faith weigh in the balance, but also his future with the girl he loves.
